The “Liberace x Flavin” lighting installation is a music and light performance. Hundreds of fluorescent bulbs between six and ten feet in length are stood up in clusters around a grand piano. The light sculpture is sound-sensitive. Each note the pianist plays adjusts the brightness of the sculpture’s bulbs.
Beneath the piano, sound controllers interpret the frequency of each note and activate electromagnetically in the same vein as a Tesla coil. When the magnetic field reaches the ring, it excites the gas inside each bulb. The bulbs begin to emit light from the area closest to the ring, extending outward.
